The wooly-stalked begonia grew in a small area of forest, on granite rocks on an island off the coast of peninsular Malaysia. Despite extensive searches, it has not been seen since first described and collected in the late 1800s. In the 20th century, most of its original forest habitat was destroyed for agriculture and logging. This begonia is one of almost 600 plant species declared extinct in the last 250 years.
